Who was St. Brendan?
There
is a renewed interest internationally in this sixth-century Irish saint
whose name appeared on ocean maps throughout the centuries. It is believed
that in his voyages in the Atlantic Ocean, St. Brendan reached the shores
of America long before Columbus.
Brendan belonged to what was called the Second Order of Irish saints,
also known as the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. His influence was widespread,
not only in Ireland but in Scotland, England, Wales, and in continental
Europe, Germany and along the Baltic coast to the Gulf of Finland.
